10:00 amSession I - Process Control
A fully automated environment is dependent on process monitoring, measurement and control. During this session we'll investigate progress and issues around in-line color measurement, "smart" (embedded chips) components, and industry benchmark testing to determine what data from automated collection systems is most useful and how it can best flow into operations, trouble shooting, and quality control management reporting. We'll also look at national and international metrology specifications in light of new technology innovations. Session Chair: Greg Bassinger, Manager of Process Controls, Graphic Arts Technical Foundation.
NoonLunch
1:00 pmSession II - Industry Architecture
The high performance printing or publishing enterprise is increasingly dependent upon the flexibility and adaptability to rapidly shifting market conditions. To cultivate this competitive advantage, businesses will be forced to rely on robust, networked, digital infrastructure that enables the entire business and production capability of the enterprise. There is no reason to believe that any vendor currently supplying our industries can develop a "magic bullet" that will allow end-users to interface and integrate the full range of system configurations necessary to serve customers' diverse needs.

An industry architecture is being developed that will support integrated business and manufacturing processes, enterprise applications, and organizational designs. During this session you'll hear what ISO Technical Committee 130 is working on, the progress of the Industry Architecture Project, a first look at the design of the Universal Data Element Cross Reference, details on new specifications from the Object Management Group's (OMG) Document Repository Task Force. Session Chair: James E. Harvey, Vice President/Spectrum Operations at Graphic Communications Association.

3:00 pmBreak
3:15 pmSession III - Commerce
Before there was "E-Commerce" there was plain ol' Commerce. Through company supply chain initiatives and customer support Extranet applications, the printing industry started tackling productivity improvements a while ago. And then this e-commerce thing started. At last count there were over 70 e-commerce companies in the industry, many trying to put forth or become the "industry standard." What's going on here? Have the original goals of improving communications between print buyers, printers, and suppliers stayed intact, or are there other changes afoot? This session will present details on what leading printers and advertising agencies are doing and why. We'll also hear details of what the B2B Standards Committee and the Printing Industries of America E-Commerce Council are contributing. Session Chair: Susan L. Kelly of Raine Consulting, Inc.
